We were on the last tour of the day and it was just the two of us. Even though it was an unexpected private tour our guide still told everything with a lot of enthusiasm and detail. He even had some shocking anecdotes for us and they tried to make it as ‘real’ as possible! We were definitely blown away by the end of the tour. A big shootout to our tour guide Iain! We really recommend visiting the Crumlin Road Gaol!
One of the prisons of "The Troubles".. tour guide was a very informative and diplomatic young man. Not a "fun" place to visit but will move your heart from the tragedy of it all.
Cruming Road Gaol closed its doors for the last time in 1996, and reopened in 2012 as a tourist attraction. Experience guides bring to life the living history through a series of recreated exhibits within the cells. The guide's knowledge of Crumlin Road Goal makes this tour very special. The next 70 minutes you experience what life must have been like for those imprisoned. We were taken to C Wing. Viewed the punishment cells, condemned man's and the execution chamber that received the condemned prisoner. We went outside into the exercise yard where executed prisoners were buried in unmarked graves, and remain to this day.
Crumlin Road Gaol was a holding prison for transportation to the colonies. Between 50,000 and 60,000 Irish convicts were transported to Australia. More recently the prison housed well known political prisoners.
There is an interesting collection of prison artefacts. A good coffee shop and Cuff's bar and grill where I had lunch. The Gaol may not be for everyone but I found it most interesting. Children are able to join the tour but not allowed into the execution chamber. Entry to this prison is by guide only, The Jailbreaker tour drops off outside the main gate at the metro bus stop, So is very handy for the Attraction when visiting Belfast.
