THINGS TO DO IN BELFAST

Drains Bay

Drains Bay is a quiet coastal escape in Northern Ireland, tucked away just outside Larne.

It’s the kind of place you stumble upon and quietly hope nobody else finds. It’s not flashy, and that’s the charm. Locals know it, a few walkers pass through, and the view out to sea speaks for itself.

If you're cruising the Antrim Coast Road, maybe on your way to Carnfunnock or Ballygally, drains Bay is one of those little stops that’s worth pulling over for and watching the waves crash into the shoreline.

What’s There?

Not much, and that's the point. A stretch of shingle beach, the soft sound of waves, and the odd paddleboarder or sea swimmer braving the chill.

On a clear day, you can see right across to Scotland. There’s a small play park at one end, a couple of benches, and usually a dog or two having the time of their life.

Parking’s easy, toilets are nearby, and if you’re lucky, you might catch one of the weekend food vans selling coffee or ice cream. No shops. No fuss.

Close By

Head north and you’ll hit Carnfunnock Country Park, with its hedge maze, gardens, and walking trails. Great for a family day out or dog walk on a sunny day, a bit further on is The Black Arch, as seen above ;-)

That cool little tunnel blasted straight through rock, the kind of thing you'd miss if you blink.

Keep driving and you’ll pass Ballygally Castle, lovely for a tea break, if haunted hotels are your thing.

The Local Feel

Drains Bay isn’t really built for tourists, it’s mostly home to people who enjoy the quiet life.

You’ll see a mix of young families and older folks out walking, especially early in the morning or just before sunset.

Even on busy summer days, the area stays surprisingly quiet. Its low profile gives it a more relaxed vibe, making it the perfect spot to catch some rays in peace.

If you’re doing the full coast drive, this is a perfect spot to stretch your legs, breathe some sea air, and slow the pace down a bit. No queues, no gift shops, just a view that hasn’t changed in generations.
